Sterling was gathered at an early age. His death certificate states that he died of convulsions. He was named for his paternal grandfather who lived in Virginia. His father first wrote of Sterling to his father, Col. Charles Sterling Hutcheson, on 7/10/1879: "My boy is a splendid fellow, as saucy as you ever saw a little rascal & most devoted to his mother. I never saw anything like the fondness for his mother while he does not seem to care for me." He later wrote of little Sterling's death to his daughter in his 7/12/1887 letter: "I received yours very much before the children left, but now it seems to me as if desolation has set in. When we came to make up the outfit, tickets, berths, trunks, etc. for the trip- his mother's formation, nothing but clay and dust, bright eyes blind-sweet mouth silent, merry laugh hushed in solemn death, & I to see him no more."
