Bruno Koehler, the first patient to the emergency hospital at the Millikin homestead when it opened Saturday, was the first to die there, having succumbed to an attack of pneumonia at 12:10 last night.
Koehler was in serious condition when taken to the hospital Saturday and it was feared from the first that he would not recover. The night before he was taken to the hospital, almost in a delirium he got out of his bed while his wife, who had kept watch over him until she was exhausted, went to sleep herself. He wandered from his home on South Maffit street to Clay street where he was picked up by an motorist and taken to his home.
Koehler was injured in an accident at the Decatur Coal Mine Sept 17, and had been in bed since. During the walk from his home to Clay street he broke the plaster cast on his ankle.
Investigation by city health officials Saturday showed that his condition was serious and more precautions should be taken than his wife, who was exhausted by her constant vigil by his bedside for weeks was able to give him and he was taken to the Red Cross emergency hospital on the Millikin place.
The Industrial commission investigator, John M. Picco, who was in Decatur to hear claims against local firms was compelled to continue the Koehler case on account of the illness of the complainant.
Koehler had been employed in Decatur mines for 11 years, starting to work when he was 16 years of age. He was widely known by miners as a conscientious and hard worker and won the respect of his employers by a constant exhibition of those traits.
He leaves his wife; one daughter, five years old; mother, Mrs. August Davis; three brothers, Ernest, Alfred and Charles; two sisters, Mrs. Ida Witt and Mrs. Robert Gates, all of Decatur.
The funeral will be held in the home of his mother, Mrs. August Davis, 1203 East Eldorado street.
