Born c.1767, Mr. Crane was in "his 65th year" at the time of his death in 1832. He was son and namesake of Joseph Crane and the former Eunice Dodd, and the husband of Sarah (nee Jones) Crane. His austerely simple gravestone is cut from brown sandstone, a material that had been ubiquitous during the colonial era, but by 1832 had long been surpassed in popularity by white marble. The old-fashioned choice was fortunate, however, as sandstone proved to withstand the elements better than marble. Mr. Crane's epitaph also harks back to the sobering reflections of the colonial era:
"Pause, reader, and reflect
that thou, too, art mortal."
