Carl Haberman, 91, Fargo, ND, formerly Mooreton, ND, died Tuesday, January 11, 2011, at Essentia Health, Fargo, ND.
The Funeral Mass will be Saturday, January 15, 11:00 a.m., at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Mooreton, ND. Visitation will be Friday, from 5 PM to 8 PM with a 7 PM prayer service at St. Anthony's Catholic Church and one hour before the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be at St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery, Mooreton. Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, is in charge of arrangements.
Carl J. Haberman was born on March 15, 1919 to Carl George and Ida (Viet) Haberman in rural Barney, ND. He grew up and attended school in Antelope Township and graduated from Antelope Consolidated School in 1937. He then attended NDSSS.
Carl was drafted into the US Army in the first peacetime draft in the US on May 21, 1941. He started his training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO with Co. A. 20th Infantry, 6th Division. He took part in the 6th army Louisiana Maneuvers on Nov. 25, 1942, he moved with his division to Yuma, AZ for desert training. In July 1943, he embarked for Hawaii, landing at Pearl Harbor, where his unit took six months of jungle training. In January 1944, the Division sailed for New Guinea, and combat, where they were involved in campaigns at Milne Bay, Finschkafen, Wewek, Hollandia, Moffin Bay, and Sansapor. In January 1945, the division again sailed in convoy for Luzon, Philippines where he was in the first wave in the assault landing in Luzon. Carl was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Presidential Unit Citation. He was discharged November 22, 1945 with the rank of a Technical Sergeant.
On January 28, 1946 at Mantador, ND he was united in marriage to Evelyn Mauch, daughter of Albert and Emma Mauch. They lived in Mantador until July 1, 1946 when they moved to their farm one mile north of Barney. In December 1947, Carl began his career as a rural mail carrier and served the Barney and Wyndmere area until he retired the fall of 1979. During and even after this time Carl also farmed. During the summer they enjoyed their time at the lake with family, and also enjoyed traveling south for the winter. On June 11, 1990, Carl and Evelyn moved to Mooreton, ND. Evelyn passed away on December 23, 2006 after 61 years of marriage and in June of the following year Carl moved to Riverview Place in Fargo, ND where he lived to the present time.
Carl was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Mooreton, ND, was a charter member of the Barney VFW Post No. 9366 and also a member of the BrownNelson American Legion Post No. 153 of Wyndmere.
Carl is survived by his children: Doug (Mary Ellen) Haberman, Edina, MN, Dean Haberman, Albuquerque, NM, Doris (Robert) Quam, Wyndmere, ND, Paul (Barb) Haberman, Pelican Rapids, MN, Yvonne (Tony) Schmit, Wyndmere, ND, Karen (Mark) Hoffert, Albuquerque, NM, and Roger (Mary) Haberman, Horace, ND; his 19 grandchildren; and his 13 great-granchildren.
