Doriseda (Dorie) Herzberg Dawson, born in San Diego on Sept 5, 1919, passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 14, 2011, surrounded by people who loved her. Dorie was the daughter of Nat and Myrtle (Lippmann) Herzberg and was a third-generation Californian on the Lippmann side of her family. Her father, Nat, immigrated from Latvia to Prescott, Ariz., at the age of 15. He lived with his uncle who owned the general store on the square in downtown Prescott. Nat went on to open a mercantile with the Goldwater family.
Dorie grew up in Westwood, Calif., with her parents and her brother, the late Jack Herzberg.
Dorie attended UCLA and Cal State Northridge. She married Sam Glassberg in 1940 and had two children, Gail and Arnie. Later in life, Sam developed MS. They moved to Oceanside, Calif., when Dorie accepted the vice principal position at Oceanside High School. During the time of integration, Dorie established herself as a peacemaker - a woman who understood the needs and feelings of all people.
Sam passed away in 1978 and Dorie married Ed Dawson in 1980. They traveled the country, touching the lives of others wherever they went.
Dorie is survived by her husband, Edward Dawson, daughter Gail Swanson (Roy) of Pennsylvania, son Arnie Glassberg (Shelly) of California, grandson Marc Glassberg of California, granddaughter Temma Caplan (Dror) Nanas of California, great-grandchildren Asher and Coleman Nanas of California, and Alarya (Bernard) Jay of Sedona, nephew Edward Caplan of Sedona, and Margaret Scully of California. Dorie was loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011, at Heritage Memorial Park in Dewey.
