Ray travelled with Sells Brothers Circus before moving to Hornersville, Missouri, where he opened a general store, one item he sold was Buster Brown shoes. Ray convinced the top brass at Buster Browns' that he would be a better person to portray the company icon than a real child. His bulldog became Tige, who lived in a shoe with him. Ray also became a celebrity at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904.
