American Folk Figure. "The original Buster Brown." Known as the famous character for "Buster Brown" shoes. Major Ray as he is known stood 44 inches tall. His wife was 37 inches in height. Ray travelled with Sells Brothers Circus before moving to Hornersville, Missouri, where he opened a general store, one item he sold was Buster Brown shoes. Ray convinced the top brass at Buster Browns' that he would be a better person to portray the company icon than a real child. His bulldog became Tige, who lived in a shoe with him. Ray also became a celebrity at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904.
