The eighth of ten children born to Robert & Phebe (Beals) Sumner of Guilford Co NC, Abby married John B Carson on 17 Feb 1787, the son of Uriah & Mary Elizabeth (Cook) Carson of OH & NC. They married at Toms Creek Friends Meeting House in Surry Co NC.

They reared eleven children, seven sons and four daughters: John Samuel, Israel, Mary L, Jacob, Caleb, Jesse B, Cecelia, Hannah, Sarah, Allen and Elijah.
