Benedict Tarring Stevens was born, 2/20/1838, in Three Springs, PA. He enlisted as a private, 10/24/1861 with the 110th Pennsylvania Infantry. The regiment saw its first major action in Virginia at second Bull Run and Fredericksburg. During the winter months of 1863, Benedict contracted typhoid fever, was hospitalized in Washington, D. C., and received a disability discharge in June of that year. After fully recovering at his farm, he enlisted a second time as a private with the 22nd Pennsylvania Cavalry in February of 1864. The 22nd saw action at Charles Town, WV, and in the Shenandoah Valley, VA at Opequon, Fisher's Hill, and Cedar Creek. In the spring of 1965, at New Creek, WV, Benedict was accidentally wounded in camp when his right arm was shot. He recovered from those injuries and ended his service in June of 1865.

Benedict married Mary Heeter, 6/4/1863, at Three Springs; they had 10 children but six of them died in infancy. After the war B. T. taught school then opened a general store in Three Springs and was for a time a traveling salesman; he was an avid outdoorsman. Benedict died, 4/19/1916, and Mary, 2/1/1920 in Three Springs and they were buried there in Three Springs Cemetery.
