Gerald W. Heinz, 77, of 308 Lake Street, Manistique, Michigan died January 15, 2011 at his home.

He was born September 15, 1933 in Manistique, the son of William and Loris (Beaudoin) Heinz. He attended St. Francis de Sales School and was a graduate of Manistique High School with the class of 1951. Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served with the 17th Bomb Wing in Korea, during the Korean War.

He then continued his education at Michigan State University where he received his bachelor's in secondary education in 1958. He later received his master's in education from Wayne State University in Detroit in 1968.

During his working career, Jerry was employed as a high school teacher. He taught school in Highland Park and Farmington Hills, Michigan for 28 years, and at the Charlotte Mecklenburg schools for 11 years. He retired in 1987.

He spent the greater part of his life in Novi, Michigan and moved back to Manistique following his retirement.

He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Manistique, the Manistique Elks Lodge #632, the Schoolcraft V.F.W. Post #4420 of Manistique, the Michigan Education Association and the Tri Valley Golf Course in Garden. He enjoyed golfing and has an avid Detroit Lion and Michigan State Football fan. While living in Novi, he was active in Little League and the Boy Scouts for many years.

Jerry is survived by his daughter, Christine (Craig) Pelchat of Mooresville, NC; his son, David (Adelle) Heinz of Davidson, NC; his former wife, Angela Heinz of Hunterville, NC; his grandchildren, Sarah Pelchat, Michael Pelchat, Drew Heinz and Avery Heinz; his sister-in-law, Betty Heinz of Manistique; along with his nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved brother, David Heinz.

Visitation will be held from 2:00-3:00 pm, Saturday, January 22, 2011 at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. A veteran's memorial ritual will be recited at 3:00 pm, immediately followed by a memorial service celebrating Jerry's life. Deacon Gilbert Sablack will officiate. Burial will be held in the Fairview Cemetery veteran's section at Manistique.

Memorial donations may be directed to the St. Francis de Sales Education Foundation, the Manistique Area Schools Foundation, or to the Elks Foundation.
