John Back (pronounced Bach) left home when he just turned 18. When he went away to the university in Heidelberg, Germany he learned of the atrocities the church subjected the people to and as a result renounced his catholic religion. This brought him into conflict with his parents and they disowned him. He decided to come to America, following an older brother Frederick that came a few years before. John left LaHarve, France on board the ship "Samuel M. Fox" arriving at Castle Garden, New York Harbor, on April 23, 1855. He made his way to Indiana and settled there to be married and raise his family. John operated a very successful carpentry and furniture business in Goshen for several years until the opportunity and the urge to farm came over him, then a move was made to an 80 acre farm two miles north of Goshen on the Middlebury Road. My great grandmother told of many stories of her memories on that farm. She even wrote several novels about life there and the surrounding community.
John died due to illness when just 37 years old due to the effects of the Civil War. He was greatly weakened by the ravages of war and when he became ill with pneumonia he could not ward off the illness. His wife was able to rent the farm out and even sold part of it to make ends meet. With the part she kept, my great grandparents Elwood and Alma (Bach) Mead bought from her and moved their family there in the late 1800's and this is where my grandmother had her fond childhood memories.
