Pelatiah Fernald was born in Kittery 3 Aug 1743 to Nathaniel and Mary (Weeks) Fernald both of Kittery. He married 4 Jun 1768 in Falmouth, Maine, Abigail, daughter of Anthony and Abigail (Small) Strout both of Truro, Massachusetts and (later) Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Abigail, the widow of Timothy Eldridge of Provincetown, Massachusetts and Falmouth, Maine (intentions 25 Dec 1756); was born 17 Jul 1735 in Provincetown, Massachusetts and later moved with her family to Maine. [Underhill, Lora A, "Descendants of Edward Small of New England and the Allied Families with Tracings of English Ancestry, Revised. (3 Vols)," Vol 1, p. 392]. She died 27 Jul 1821 in Falmouth. She and Pelatiah had at least five children, possibly others. [Stackpole, ES, "Old Kittery and Her Families," p. 384]. Abigail's age at death in 1821 of 83 is at variance with her date of birth as given in Provincetown Vital Records - as published in The Mayflower Descendant, 9:103 (1907) "abigal Strout Dafter to anthony and abigal Strout born the 17 day of July 1735").

Abigail Strout, was a first cousin to Elisha Small, Jr of Provincetown, Massachusetts; Cape Elizabeth, Maine and (later) Gray, Maine. Elisha Small, Jr was the leader of the heirs of Daniel Small who were among the principal claimants in the great Ossipee Deed controversy of the 1770s. Both Pelatiah Fernald and Elisha Small Jr were arrested for trespass in the first major legal test of that controversy. Ultimately the case was won by the heirs of Samuel Small though the justice of that decision remains in doubt to this day.

Elisha Small, Jr died destitute in Gray in 1829 at about the age of 89. Pelatiah preceded him to the grave by 13 years.
