David carried a large scar around his ribs from a wound received when an enemy bullet hit a thimble he had in his breast pocket causing the bullet to ricochet away from his heart around his ribs instead. The thimble was last in the possession of his granddaughter, Elsie Mae Billups, daughter of Jahile, its whereabouts are now unknown.
