On census records, John states he was born in Alabama. He married Caroline Volentine in Caldwell Parish May 29, 1849. They appear on the 1850 Caldwell Parish census, living in the household of John Volentine, Caroline's father. By 1860 they are in Catahoula Parish with the following children: J.B. (John B.), W.H., Levi, Mary and J.W. Subsequent census records show other children: Sarah., Martha I., Theodore L. and Letha. On the 1900 Catahoula Parish census, John's widow shows they had ten children, but only eight were still alive. An April 16, 1931 Jena Times article about a Miles reunion, states the tenth child's name was Elizabeth Miles. The same article states John came to Louisiana from Alabama as a small boy.

A John W. Miles is found in Louisiana Confederate Service Records. He enlisted as a private in Company C., 2nd LA Infantry [known as the Pelican Greys, mainly out of Monroe, LA] in New Orleans. He was taken as a prisoner of war and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA. He was a resident of Russell County, AL. 3rd Corp. John Volentine (later promoted to 2nd Corp.), John's Father-in-law, was also with this unit.
