Austrian musicologist. He was director of the Salzburg Mozarteum (1917-1938 and 1945-1971), had been conductor of the Vienna tonkunstler Orchestra (which later became the Vienna Symphony Orchestra). He founded the Mozarteum orchestra, collaborated on a film of Mozart's life ("When The Gods Love"), and produced standard biographies of Mozart (1927) and Shubert (1945). In 1945 he was one of the founders of the Salzburg Festival
