Fredrick Herman Knauff was born Aug. 23, 1858 in Beaver County, Pa. His parents were Johann Adam (1824-1899) & Elisabeth Ifft-Knauff (1827-1905.) Adam & Elisabeth Knauff left their home in Hesse-Kassel, Germany the first of July, 1831, when he was 6 and she was 4 years old. They Immigrated to their new home in America, arriving at the Port of Baltimore on Sept. 30, 1831. Adam & Elisabeth's families first settled in Butler County, Pa. They were married April 7, 1846 in Mercer Co., Pa.

Fred met his first wife, America Catharine Harman in Henry County, Ohio and they were married there, June 22, 1884. America was born Sept. 3, 1866 in Hancock County, Ohio. Her parents were John T. (1840-1881) & Isabella Aurand-Harman (1846-1877.) America's father, John Harman served during the Civil War in several Ohio Infantry Regiments. He was listed in the 3rd. Ohio, Company G; 21st. Ohio, Company C; and the 12th. Ohio, Company E.

Fred & America had 3 sons:

Willard Franklin Knauff (1885-1974.) He was married to Oleva Colleen Rehr (1889-1972.) They had two daughters, Helen Marie & Maxine Knauff.

Harvey Lester Knauff (1887-1958.) He was married to Hazel E. Reed (1893-?) They had two children, Ruth Dorothy Knauff-Colern & Archie Raymond Knauff.

Alvah Ray Knauff (1889-1951.) He was married to Grace Maud Maxham (1886-1965.) They had 12 children, Eunice May Knauff-Gehrlein, Alton R., Knauff, Arlene Knauff-Mackey, Vernon Clair Knauff, Grace Lelah Knauff-Enders, Herbert F. Knauff, Gloria Knauff-Stanley, Donald C. Knauff, Arden L. Knauff, Patricia Ann Knauff-Ferguson, Darrell L. Knauff & Ronald D. Knauff.

America Catherine Harman-Knauff passed away on Nov. 2, 1891 from Typhoid in Greenville, Mercer, Pa. She is buried in the Shenango Valley Cemetery in Greenville, Pa. She was only 25 years old.

Fred married his second wife, Mary Louisa Simpson on May 9, 1894 in Mercer, Pa. Mary was born May 22, 1863 in Springfield Township, Mercer Co., Pa. Her parent's were John C. (1832-1904) & Margaret Louisa Baughman-Simpson (1837-1905.)

Fred & Mary had three children together:

Lillie Elizabeth Knauff (1895-1933.) She was married to Forest W. Morgan (1889-1967) and they had 3 children. Francis F. Morgan, Viola Louise Morgan-Texter & Clyde J. Morgan.

Carl Edwin Knauff (1897-1973.) He was married to Carrie Grace Dalrymple (1899-1996.) They had 3 children. Lyle Edwin Knauff, Russell E. Knauff & Carlene Belle Knauff-McBride.

Bessie Louise Knauff (1902-1973.) She was married to Frank Henry Dunn (1898-1983.) They had 8 children. Dorothy M. Dunn-Masson, Mary Ann Knauff-Currie, Frank Dunn Jr., Raymond E. Dunn, Robert F. Dunn, Kenneth W. Dunn, David Leroy Dunn & Larry Paul Dunn.

Mary Louisa Simpson-Knauff passed away at 58 years old, on Dec. 27, 1921 in Albion, Erie Co., Pa. She is buried with Fred in the Albion Cemetery.

Fred was married one more time on Oct. 7, 1922 to Lydia Mae Cornwell Maxham (1863-1952.) Fred & Lydia adopted a daughter, Winifred Felton (1915-2013) who was married to Oliver L. Mansfield (1912-1998.) They had 4 children. Eileen Mae Mansfield-Pettis, Richard L. Mansfield, Donald P. Mansfield & Melvin Mansfield.

Fred retired from the Bessemer Railroad in 1930, where he was a car inspector for 45 years. He was a charter member of the East Springfield, Pa. I.O.O.F. Lodge and a member of the Federated Church located there.
