WINSTON-SALEM - Robert Daniel "Dan" Barber, 68, died unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, January 15, 2011. He was born January 9, 1943 in Goldsboro, NC to the late Lessie Heath Barber and James Henry Barber, an accomplished musician during the "Big Band" era. He was preceded in death by his brother, William M. Barber. Dan was a Vietnam Era Veteran and member of the distinguished Army Band. He graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Music and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He retired as VP of National Sales from Sara Lee Hosiery in 1994 after 27 years employment. Influenced by his father's career, Dan's passion became music and he was an accomplished trombone player and tenor vocalist. Singing became his focus and his credits include three summers with the Lost Colony in Manteo, NC, singing with the Robert Shaw Chorale at Lincoln Center, NYC, membership in numerous Jazz Quartets, a founder and member of the "Exact Change and Checkered Cab" vocal group in NYC and being a paid soloist. In 1977 he returned to Winston-Salem where he sang with the Piedmont Chamber Singers, the Winston-Salem Symphony Choral, the St Paul's Choir of All Ages and the St. Paul's Adult Choir. Dan is survived by his wife of 35 years, Diane Elizabeth Barber; his daughters, Danielle Barber Zufelt and husband, David of Phoenix, AZ, Samantha Barber Rementer and her husband, Tyson of Charlottesville, VA; three grandsons whom he adored, Tyson Zufelt, 4, Grady Zufelt, 2 and Jonah Rementer, 12 days; his brother, James H. Barber II and wife, Gwen; his sister, Judy Barber Crow and husband, Gene; 13 nieces and nephews; and 15 grand nieces and nephews. The Funeral will be at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Sunday, January 23, at 3 p.m. and a reception with the family will take place in the Dudley Colhoun Room at St. Paul's Episcopal Church following the Services. The family suggests any desired memorial contributions be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 520 Summit Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.
