One of Monroe Township's most highly esteemed Christian ladies, Mrs. Jennie Elinor (Gourley) Platt passed away at the home of her brother, John T. Gourley, on April 2, 1934, after a sickness of about three weeks duration caused by a paralytic stroke. Jennie Elinor Gourley was born on June 14, 1848, at the family home in Monroe Township, Clarion County, the eldest daughter of the late John and Margaret Ferguson Gourley. She was united in marriage with Hugh C. Platt on May 13th, 1897. They made their home in Rimersburg until the death of Mr. Platt, which occurred on June 2, 1913. The deceased united in membership with the Presbyterian Church of Clarion in 1870. In going to Rimersburg, she took her church letter to the church in that place. Mrs. Platt was a devout Christian and her life revealed the beauties and healthfulness of the Christian graces which characterized her daily living. She was of a quiet and retiring disposition, but from her life flowed that sweet peace which is the gift of God's love. Mrs. Platt is survived by two brothers and one sister, namely: John T. Gourley and William F. Gourley, of near Clarion and Mrs. Annie E. Rodgers, of Youngstown, Ohio. The death of Mrs. Platt is the first in the family of four children of John and Margaret Gourley. The average ages of their children is 79 years, a notable fact. Their father came from Westmoreland County in 1833 and settled on the family homestead. He was married and brought his wife from the same to the homestead in 1847, since which time the family has held a prominent place in the county. Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at the home of her brother, John T. Gourley, conducted by the Rev. C. C. Clawson, and interment was made in the Rimersburg Cemetery in the family plot.
