Per his obituary, he was born in Wytheville, VA. At an early age he moved with his parents to Johnson County, MO. He crossed the plains twice, in 1847 and 1848, to Santa Fe, NM, and then came to California in 1849. There he mined during the gold rush. He got married in 1865 and settled on a ranch near Hotaling, Placer County. He lived there until 1874 when he sold out and moved to Tustin, Orange County, where he went into the mercantile business which he pursued to the day of his death.
