Son of Ebenezer Darling Keach and his wife, Ann Brewer. William married Eliza Ann Mintun on 3 May 1851 in Louisa county, Iowa. In the 1870 census, they were living in Bardolph, McDonough county, Illinois. In 1875, they were residing in Big Creek township, Ellis County, Kansas. William and his wife were seperated by 1880, with Eliza and children living with her brother, John Mintun, in Rush City, Minnesota. William filed for a disability pension during 1890 in Utah, and was admitted to the Sawtelle soldiers' home in California during 1894. Records show he was buried the day he died at Los Angeles National Cemetery, with the cause of death listed as paralysis.
Of twelve children claimed by his former wife in the 1900 census, only 3 survived their father: son William Lyman Keach died 4 months after his father, and son Walter B. Keach died 5 years later. He was also survived by his former wife, and daughter, Mrs. Sadie E. Treadway, of Kansas City, Missouri.
