"Holly Creek John" Mullins died on September 18, 1859 and his wife Ollie Cox Mullins on January 22, 1877. This is not his original headstone. This tombstone was provided by Ida Cunningham. This cemetery contained the remains of 10-15 graves at one time. Some of the original headstones have been removed.
John & Ollie sold 200 acres in Burke County, North Carolina that Ollie had inherited to James Bailey in 1819. The couple then moved to eastern Kentucky by 1820.
After 1823, they returned to North Carolina, where they remained until about 1829-1830. They then moved to Holly Creek, which today is in Dickenson County, Virginia. John owned several thousand acres in the county.
John and Ollie are buried on a slope about 300 yards west of the courthouse, behind the Baptist Church in Clintwood, Virginia. His father John Mullins Sr. is buried several hundred yards south of this location at the foot of Sunset Hill.
John Mullins with family members arrived in the area around 1829 from North Carolina. He arrived with his sons, David and Issac and his daughter Mary. He supposedly left his chldren here in this area and went back to North Carolina to bring back the rest of the familiy, belongings and livestock.
His father Revolutionary John Mullins is buried across the town of Clintwood, at the foot of Sunset Hill.
