"The death of Mrs. Ellen Celeste Barrus occurred at the home of Mrs. W. E. Brown in River Street on Wednesday afternoon, November 25th. In her 91st year, Mrs. Barrus had been falling for several weeks. She was tenderly cared for by Mrs. Brown and Mr. and Mrs. J. Gordon Black and Miss Hinds. The funeral was held at the home of Mr. Theodore Hinds and Mrs. Louise Clark, two of her cousins, on Saturday afternoon. November 28th, the Reverend Johnson A. Springsted officiating, and interment was made in Lakeview Cemetery. Mrs. Barrus was born on Stewart's Patent on October 13, 1835, the daughter of Alvin and Nancy Losee Barrus. She lived in this village continuously from 1882, having for some years previous to that time lived in Utica, where she taught a select school. She married Olcott Orendorf, who she divorced after a short married life. In this village Mrs. Barrus taught kindergarten, located in Church Street, which she discontinued in 1887. For a number of years she lived in Church Street with the late Mrs. J. E. Bates. During her years of old age and until he removed to Rochester she enjoyed the devoted care of her nephew, Ralph Barrus ... Among those surviving are a brother, George Barrus of Beloit, Wis.; three nephews, Floyd Barrus of Beloit, Wis.; Ralph Barrus of Rochester; Harry of Miami, Florida, and two nieces, Mrs. Harry Lane of Pleasant Valley and Mrs. Josephine Barrus of Utica, and a great-niece, Miss Mary Louise Barrus of Rochester.
