Enlisted on 18 August 1862 at Richfield into the 121st New York Volunteer Infantry as a corporal to serve for a term of three years.
Mustered into Capt. John Ramsey's Co. G on 23 August 1862 at Camp Schuyler near Herkimer, New York.
Saw action in all the battles that the 121st N.Y. was in, such as Fredericksburg, Salem Church, Gettysburg, The Wilderness to name a few. In September 1864 he was shot in the lefthand and sent off to the hospital. He was then placed in the Veterans Reserve until he was discharged.
