MRS. WILLIAM ELLIS DEAD
PROMINENT WOMAN PASSED AWAY
WAS PIONEER RESIDENT OF COUNTY
People of Elliott and vicinity were shocked beyond expression last Friday morning when it became known that Mar. William Ellis had passed away the night before. It was generally known that Mrs. Ellis had not been in good health the past winter and while he end was but a question of time, yet when death came, the community could hardly realize that another good woman, a pioneer resident of Montgomery County, had been called across the river.
Amanda Jane Murrah was born in Adams County, Illinois, on July 24, 1857 and died at her home near Elliott, Iowa, April 12, 1917, aged 59 years, 8 months, and 18 days.
At the age of 11 years, she moved with her parents to Mahaska County, Iowa, where she resided until four years later, when she moved to Montgomery County. She had lived in this county since the time hense, we say she was a pioneer resident.
In the year of 1880, deceased was married to her now bereaved husband, William Ellis; the ceremony taking place at Red Oak, where they resided for about one year, moving from that city in 1881 to the farm, located a short distance southwest of Elliott. To this union were born five children, of whom two sons and two daughters survived the mother; one son having died in infancy. The surviving children are Henry H., Mrs. Minnie Lantis, Mrs. Clara Reed, and Fred T., all of this immediate vicinity.
Mrs. Ellis is also survived by one sister and two brothers as follows; Mrs. Anna Hiberlee of Spearville, Kansas, Wayne Murrah of Great Bend, Kansas, and Frank Murrah of Kansas City, Missouri.
Mrs. Ellis united with the Church of Christ at Elliott in 1900 and has lived a consistent Christian life, a life which she hoped and prayed would be acceptable in the eyes of her Savior, life beyond reproach. In the passing of Mrs. Ellis, her husband and children lose a loving wife and mother, the church loses a faithful worker and the community loses a beloved woman whose ideals were the very highest.
Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ in this icy last Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. D. S. Thompson, pastor of the Church of Christ at Elder, Iowa, who while pastor of the church of this city, as internally associated with the bereaved family. The Rev. Thompson was assisted in the service by Rev. C. C. Atwood, pastor of the church at the present tie. The words of the Rev. Thompson at the service will be cherished by the bereaved family as long as they live, because they contained a source of consolation and comfort which could not be obtained from any other source. A large concourse of sorrowing friends of the deceased attended the last sad rites.
