William was the eldest son of Jessie and Hannah Self Ledford. He was a farmer. He enlisted in May 14, 1861 in Cleveland County, North Carolina. He mustered into Company D, NC 15th Infantry Regiment on Jun. 2, 1861 and transferred out on Jan. 9, 1863, after having been AWOL for several months, to Company B, NC 49th Infantry Regiment.

He was the second husband of Lucinda Digh (her first husband was killed at Gettysburg). Their marriage produced at least seven children (Ellen Jane, Hester, Dora, John Pinkney, Priscilla, Maggie, and Jessie).

***NOTE: During the 1900 Federal Census, his widowed daughter, Margaret Ledford Terry, was in his household along with her two children, Cleophus Terry and Bessie Terry.

***NOTE: His brother, Thomas Ledford, died of disease on Aug. 9, 1864 in Petersburg, VA while serving for the Confederacy. Thomas, along with their brother John, mustered into Company C, 10th N.C. State Troops (known as Charlotte Artillery) on Aug. 15, 1862 in Camp Hill, NC.
