MRS MARIE PAGE, STATE PIONEER, DIES HERE
Believed to have been one of the oldest pioneers of Western Nevada, Mrs. Marie Lonkey Page died at her home on West Fourth Street at noon today. She had been ill for about two months. Mrs. Page was born ninety –four years ago in Canada and when sixteen years old came to Grass Valley, Cal., with her parents. During their trip across the country they were exposed to many hardships.
Two years later she was married to Oliver Lonkey of Grass Valley and the following year they settled in Little Valley near Franktown. It was here that Mr. Lonkey first entered the lumber business which he developed until he was the operator of one of the largest mills in Western Nevada. On many occasions Mrs. Page has told friends of the long winter months spent at the Little Valley lumber camp, snowbound.
Fifteen years later they moved to Virginia City, then in its heyday, where Mr. Lonkey further increased his holdings in lumbering interests, moving to Verdi eighteen years later, when the Comstock quieted down. The couple at one time owned a large part of Verdi, and operated the Lonkey mill there. Mr. and Mrs. Lonkey were close friends of Sandy Bowers and his wife and on many occasions were guests at their mansion in Washoe Valley. They first made their acquaintance when they lived in Little Valley. Mr. Lonkey died in 1905 and Mrs. Lonkey married Robert Page of England, two years later, moving to Reno in 1908 to live in the twenty four room house on West Fourth Street, once a show place of Reno. Mr. Page died in 1921. Mrs. Page was the aunt of Clarence and Percy Cota, Irma Lonkey, Mrs. Verdi Shirley, Mrs. Thomas Salter, Miss C.M. Sancheran and Robert and Walter Grignon, all of Reno. Clarence Vere Cota and Percy Eben Cota have resided with her for many years. Funeral services will be announced later by the Ross-Burke Company.
