John Cole was born on 28 November 1825 in Pennsylvania, son of Ensor Cole and Elizabeth Schaffer. He was married on 18 February 1849 near Columbiana, Mahoning County, Ohio by Reverend H. Sonnedecker to Anna Crumbacher. Anna was born on 30 March 1826 in Ohio, daughter of Daniel Crumbacher and Esther Overholtzer.

On 23 August 1850, John and Anna lived with their daughter Esther and his sister Ruthena Cole in Beaver township, Mahoning County. John was working as a carpenter.

On 27 June 1860, John and Anne were living in Center, Columbiana County, Ohio. Their farm was valued at $1,000. Anne was tending a household that included six children- Hester, Eli, Hannah, Elisabeth, John, and Sarah- along with a relative of her's, Hester "Crimbecker," and two men, William Roland [working as a coke burner] and Gerard Floury.

On 13 August 1870, John and Ann lived in Beaver township, Mahoning County, Ohio. Their farm was valued at $400 and their personal possessions at $100. John worked as a "sayur" [sawyer], Ann kept house, Hester was a milliner, Elias was a farmhand, Hannah and Lizzie helped with housework, John, Sarah, and Joseph attended school, while Laura was still a child.

On 1 June 1880, John and Anna were living in Washingtonville, Salem township, Columbiana County, Ohio. John and son Joseph were making coke [burning wood to make charcoal]. Son John worked in a coal mine while Anna and daughter Laura kept house.

Anna died on 10 April 1882 in Ohio.

John was married second to Rebecca Tellis. Rebecca was born on 26 September 1833 in West Virginia.

On 1 June 1900. John and Rebecca lived in Washingtonville, with John working as a teamster.

Rebecca died on 6 December 1900.

On 15 April 1910, John was living with his daughter Hannah, her husband Emanuel Blake, and a grandchild, Twilla Ohle, at 252 Rebecca Street in Youngstown, Mahoning County.

John died on 18 February 1913. John Cole and his wives are buried in the Zion Hill Church of the BrethrenCemetery near Columbiana, Mahoning County, Ohio.

John and (Anna) Crumbacher Cole were the parents of nine children:

ii. ELIAS COLE was born on 19 August 1850 in Ohio. Elias was married to Margaret Klingensmith.
iii. HANNAH COLE was born on 27 November 1851
iv. ELIZABETH COLE was born on 1 July 1854

vi. SARAH COLE was born on 28 June 1859. She died on 22 December 1862.
vii. MARIAH COLE was born on 11 June 1861
viii. JOSEPH NELSON COLE was born on 9 February 1864
ix. LAURA ALICE COLE was born on 7 September 1867
