Arthur "Shorty" Phillips was the only son of Ralph Phillips (1901-1966) and Laura Mae Cutright Phillips (1899-1992). He was a 1938 graduate of Coalton High School. In 1942, he was married to Mildred Louise Broschart, by Alfred E. Bennett. Mildred and Arthur had one child, a daughter, Patricia Ann Phillips (Corley), who survives. Mildred preceeded him in death on March 28, 1980. Mr. Phillips was a veteran of World War II. He served as a Staff Sergeant (Sq. A) Medic within the 34th Troop Carrier Squadron, 315th Troop Carrier Group, 9th Army Air Forces. His military service was from August 3, 1942 through October 21, 1945. He was stationed in France, the United Kingdom, primarily England, and in Brazil. As chief Medical NCO in charge of the dispensary, Mr. Phillips administered care and treatment to the sick, wounded, and injured. While attached to the air evacuation squadron he supervised the establishment of procedures for transporting the injured, via aircraft. After the War, he helped run the family grocery store at Jimtown, WV. He was employed by the C.C. Keys Company in Clarksburg, West Virginia for several years. He became co-owner and operator of the Phillips-Harlan Lumber Company at Jimtown, West Virginia after the death of his father in 1966. He retired from the lumber business c. 1978. Then he performed dozer work for individuals, worked part time in his T.V. repair shop at Jimtown, and was employed by Mike Ross, Inc. Mr. Phillips was a member of the Elkins area AA, the Roaring Creek Lions Club and the Phillips Chapel UM Church at Jimtown. In 1988, Arthur was married to Glenna Jean Bibey Bunner. Her first husband was
Denzil A Bunner. They were divorced in Ohio in 1973. She is the daughter of Paul Bibey and Evelyn Pearl Arbogast. In September of 2007, the old Norton School Bell was placed in the steeple of Phillips Chapel U.M. Church at Jimtown. This 28 inch diameter steel alloy bell, cast by the C.S. Bell Company of Hillsboro, Ohio on 07/08/1921, was presented to the church as a memorial gift by the family of the late Ralph Phillips, Laura Cutright Phillips, Arthur Phillips, and Mildred Broschart Phillips.
