Rev. John Raines was the son of William Guy and Elizabeth (Webster) Raines. He was born Ryton. He was the husband of Mary (Sadler) Raines. They were married September 17, 1805. Mary died October 10, 1858. Rev. Raines was a Local Preacher in the English Wesleyan Church in England. In 1836 he was ordained Local Elder at the Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Lockport, New York. Rev. Raines was also a trustee of Genesee Wesleyan Seminary, Lima, New York.

"In 1816-1818 Rev. John Raines gathered together the remnant of a fortune invested in shipping interests, well nigh destroyed by the French Wars ensuing upon the escape of Napoleon from Elba.
