Sarah was the second of eleven children of Sigurður Sigurðsson (1841-1926) and Þóra Sigurðardóttir (1843-1931). She was born in Akureyri, Iceland and was nearly 7 years old when she moved with her family to Manitoba, Canada. They lived at Icelandic River (now Riverton), Manitoba and later in Glenboro.

In 1898 at the home of her fiance's parents, she married Jon Magnus "John" Johnson (1874-1939). John was the son of Magnús Jónsson "frá Fjalli" (1851-1942) and Margrét Una Grímsdóttir (1848-1934). Four years after their marriage, in 1902, they moved with their son and both sets of parents to Blaine, Whatcom, Washington. Their son and only child Charles died in 1909 at age 9 of typhoid fever.

Sarah took care of her father-in-law Magnús in his later years. He was a writer who was well known to western Icelanders and became blind at least 15 years before his death in 1942.
