OLIVER LONKEY

Death Calls AN OLD NEVADAN OLIVER LONKEY DIES AT VERDI AFTER FIVE YEARS OF SUFFERING

Oliver Lonkey, aged seventy-four years, one of the most prominent men in western Nevada, passed away at Verdi last evening at 7 o'clock after a long illness, extending over a period of five years. For several days he had been lying in a semi conscious condition and early in the week his near relatives were summoned to his home to bid him farewell. Mr. Lonkey was a native of Canada but he came to the United States in the days of his young manhood and spent the greater portion of his life in the west. Early in the sixties Mr. Lonkey came to Nevada from California where he worked as a laborer, chopping wood. He was a practical logger and soon after reaching the state started a saw mill at Franktown where he amassed a fortune cutting and selling lumber from the Comstock. He built the first successful logging flume in this section and carried on his operations on an immense scale. Later he removed to Virginia which was his home for many years. About twenty years ago Mr. Lonkey moved to Verdi where he had acquired large lumbering interests. He owned several of the largest mills and factories in the sierras and though he lost heavily by fire on many occasions he always recovered and pressed ahead. He had splendid business foresight and no deal seemed to large for him. Mr. Lonkey died possessed of a large fortune. In addition to his interests at Verdi he owned property at Reo and Virginia (City) He was childless through life but is survived by his wife. He was a prominent member of the Knights of Pythias, his membership being at Verdi.

VERDI HONORS DEAD CITIZEN
SPECIAL TRAIN CARRIES REMAINS OF OLIVER LONKEY TO RENO
St. Mary's Church would scarcely half accommodate the throng that attended the funeral of the late Oliver Lonkey, of Verdi, his morning. The remains were brought to the city on a special train carrying over two hundred Verdi people, arriving here at 8:30 o'clock. A short time later service began at St. Mary's church, a high requiem mass being celebrated by Rev Father Corcoran assisted by Father Horgan, of Sparks and Lewis of San Francisco. The sermon was delivered by Father Horgan who spoke eloquently of the long and useful life of the dead man. The remains were then borne to St. Mary's cemetery where the interment took place. The following persons all old friends of the dead man, acted as honorary pall bearers: T.K. Hymers, D.B. Boyd, H.F. O'Connor, W. A. Cobb, J.F. Condon, and R. S. Meacham. The active pall bearers, ten in number were all employees of the mills in which the dead man was heavily interested. All of the mills at Verdi, including the factory of the California Pine Box Company, closed down. The special train carrying the mourners and friends left for home at 1:30 this afternoon.
