Abner was the son of John and Winifred Maddox Camp, original Jonesboro, Clayton Co. pioneers. Abner was a farmer, and a well respected citizen of the Jonesboro area. During the Civil War, he was appointed by the Clayton Co. Commissioners to help the families of the Confederate soldiers who were serving in the war. His three oldest sons served in the war. Abner was a Mason. He married Mary Harris on 25 Jan 1834, and they had the following children:

1. Matthew Harris Camp b 1835
2. William Leonard Camp b 1838
3. Henry Morris Camp b 1840
4. Sterling W. Camp b 1843
5. James Abner Nelson Camp b 1846
6. Mary Jane Camp b 1851
7. Clarinda Camp Dabney b 1853
8. Elizabeth M. Camp b 1857
