Scientist. Pioneering geo-physicist, the founder and longtime director of Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Observatory. Raised on a Texas farm, he studied physics at Rice Institute and went on to become a world-renowned authority on earth sciences, especially seismology and oceanography. He invented the SOFAR signal system-in which depth charges transmit sound underwater for thousands of miles and helped develop a lunar seismograph that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin left on the moon.
