"Mrs. Lydia Swasey mother of John W. Swasey the well known writing teacher of Montpelier, was prostrated some 10 days ago since by apoplexy; she is almost 90 years old, but has enjoyed very good health heretofore and has retained her mental faculties in a remarkable degree. She read a great deal, and was thoroughly interested in all of the great issues of the day especially religion and temperance. The day before her illness she took a long walk which she greatly enjoyed. Mrs. Swasey is a cultured and refined woman and greatly beloved. For the last 16 years she has resided with her only surviving daughter, Mrs. Henry R Stackpole. Her husband died some six years ago.
