Joseph was born to Martin and Jadwiga (Cislewicz) Golebiewski in Gniezno County located in west-central Poland, then part of Prussia.

Joseph and his wife Josephine were married during 1877 at Klecko Parish, Gniezno, Wielkopolskie, Poland. Poznan Project online marriage records show, "Joseph Golebiowski (age 24) and Josepha Skowronska (17), marriage entry # 36 of 1877 in Klecko Parish." His birth record uses the surname Golebiewski, most likely the correct Polish spelling.

At some time after coming to America the family changed their surname to Golombiecki, a spelling not found in the thousands of Polish surnames listed at the Poznan Project.

Joseph and Josephine and their daughter Magdalena (Mildred Rose) immigrated to Buffalo, NY, during 1880 and came to Culdrum Township, Morrison, MN, during late 1883.

Joseph's widowed mother Jadwiga (Hattie) is likely buried in this cemetery but has no remaining marker. She was living with Joseph's family during the 1900 but not 1905 census. Jadwiga, also known as Hedwig, was born about 1820 and her 1841 marriage record notes Marcin Golembiecki (32 years old) and Jadwiga Cieslewicz (21 years old), married in Debnica Parish, Gniezno Archdiocese, Wielkopolskie, Poland.

Sacred Heart Church death records have Joseph dying in Flensburg on 8 September 1911 of stomach cancer. He was buried three days later.

Joseph has four known siblings buried in the United States, one in Flensburg, one in Sobieski, one in Detroit, MI, and one near Buffalo, NY. There are Apolonia (Findagrave ID 69729782), Antonina (Findagrave ID 65511424), Agnes (Findagrave ID 171706325) and Walenty (Findagrave ID 181684507).
