A brief notice of John's death was published in the Little Falls Herald newspaper of Friday, 2 September 1910 as follows:
John Minchow of Pike Creek died Thursday afternoon of last week of old age. He is survived by a wife and three grown-up sons. They are Joseph of Minneapolis, Simon of Flensburg and John of Pike Creek.
The funeral was held Saturday morning from the Flensburg church.
Polish records online show John Minchau married Anna Krause during 1850 in Konarzyny Parish, Chojnice County, Pomorskie Province, Poland. A number of other families came to the Flensburg area from the northern Poland Province.
Polish church records from that parish document the births of seven children to Johann Minchau and Anna Krause between 1851 and 1869. Two of those children, Johann, Jr. born 1859, and Simon born 1860, also came to Pike Creek Township. From census records Simon immigrated first during 1882 or 1883, Johann (John) Sr. about 1884 and Johann Jr. during 1887.
Johann Sr. and Jr. adopted the Minchow surname spelling in Minnesota while Simon and his family used Minshaw. The original Polish spelling is Minchau, a common name in the Konarzyny Parish area.
All three families initially farmed in Pike Creek Township and by 1910 John Sr. and Anna were living with their son Simon while John Jr. and his family had moved to Culdrum Township.
John Sr. died in Pike Creek Township on August 24, 1910, and his wife Anna soon followed him in death on March 25, 1911.
