Born in New Haven, CT, to Thomas Johnson and the former Eleonor/Ellena Bostwick, Joseph Johnson was among the first settlers of Newark, NJ, where he died "in his 83rd year" in 1733/34. Widowed the previous year, he had been married to the former Rebecca Pierson. His colonial era gravestone is one in a row of several belonging to the Johnson family, including his parents, who both died in 1694, and Col. Eliphelet Johnson (c.1696-1760).
The Johnsons' remains and sandstone steles, which were originally in First Presbyterian Churchyard in Downtown Newark, were transferred to Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in the 1880's. Joseph Johnson's is distinguished by a finely-carved floral border and winged soul-effigy of the portrait type, reminiscent of the work of the masterful Ebenezer Price of Elizabeth, NJ.
