DIED A FARMER

William McClelland was Loath to Quit His Early Calling

William McClelland died at his home in Portland township last Wednesday night after two weeks of intense suffering.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at his late residence Rev. W. P. French officiating. Burial at Portland Cemetery.

Deceased was born in Wayne County, Ohio in 1829. In 1854, he came to Portland, locating a half mile north of the village, on the farm now owned by S. McVeigh. He also resided a few years on the C. H. Maynard farm in Christian Bend, and 21 years ago moved the farm on which he died.

He was married in 1853, in Ohio, to Sarah A. Hillis, who survives him.

Six children have been born, five of whom are living. John A., the oldest, resides at Portland, as do also Samuel H., Martha and Emma, Jas. A. McClelland lives in Mulliken.

The stores of John A. McClelland and McClelland Sisters (note: names Martha J. and Emma)were closed Thursday and Friday and crape told of a death in the family.

Mr. McClelland was a man of very quiet manners, and was seldom seen in the village. His first thought was for the
comfort of his family and even during his last year, though a constant sufferer, he kept his troubles to himself that none of his relatives might be alarmed. He had often been urged to quit the farm and move to the village where rest might be attained but he was loathe to abandon the pursuit he had followed since childhood.
The large numbers of neighbors and friends attending the last sad rites was a fitting attest to the esteem in which he was held.
