HAMPTON - George Bains Jr., 73, passed away on Feb. 20, 2011, at Sentara Careplex Hospital.

He was born Aug. 20, 1937, in Newport News, to George Bains and Mary McCreedy Bains, and moved to his lifelong home in Wythe, in Hampton, in 1938.

George graduated from Hampton High School in 1955 and from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1959, where he had been a member of the Corps of Cadets. A professional engineer, he began his career in 1959, with the atomic power division of Newport News Shipbuilding. He worked on the construction of the nuclear carrier, U.S.S. Enterprise, and retired in 1993 while working on the refueling of the same ship. In between, he worked on the construction, overhaul, and refueling of a number of nuclear-powered vessels.
Baptized and confirmed in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, in Newport News, he served on the church's vestry and as junior warden. He was also active at Trinity United Methodist Church. Always ready to lend a helping hand, he volunteered his skills and time to many community projects and organizations including the Jaycees, the Engineers Club of the Virginia Peninsula, Troop 2, B.S.A., the Hampton oyster bed restoration project, Charles Taylor Art Center, and Habitat for Humanity.

He was a docent at Fort Monroe's Casemate Museum and served as president of the Hampton Roads Chapter of the American Association of Individual Investors.

George was a strong, fun-loving man and a great storyteller. He loved repairing things. He was always more than eager to help family, friends, and neighbors with any project they might need him to do. He was especially devoted to his wife, son, and extended family. Always supportive, helpful, selfless and loving, he will be greatly missed.

George is survived by his wife of 41 years, Nancy Jane Cyrus Bains; son, David Ralph Bains and his wife, Martha; brother, Richard Bains and his wife, Mary Lou; nephew, George Daniel Bains and his wife, RenEe; nieces, Beth Bains, Maria Peters and her husband, Gary, and Victoria Bains; great-nieces and nephews, Melissa Shepherd and her husband, Field, Andrew Bains, George Everett Bains, Chelsea Bains, Patrick Bains, Kristopher Peters, Jonathan Peters, and Danielle Peters.
