CROSSVILLE — May 12, 1921 — Feb. 23, 2011
Gracie "Thelma" Woody, 89, of Crossville, passed away Feb. 23, 2011. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011 at 1 p.m. at Cornerstone Baptist Church, with Ted B. Woody and Pastor Mike Kerley officiating. Burial will follow in Woody Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Cornerstone on Saturday from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., two hours prior to the service.
Mrs. Woody was born May 12, 1921, in Bledsoe County, the daughter of William C. and Docia A. Hale-Brown.
She graduated from Crossville High School in 1940 where she was a star basketball player for the Maroons. During WWII, she worked on the Manhattan Project at the "Secret City" in Oak Ridge. In 1944, she married her high school sweetheart, Arthur D. Woody Sr. Arthur served in the U.S. Air Force as they traveled the world together and their family grew. After retiring to Crossville, she worked many years as a clerk at Mitchell's and Smith's Drug Stores. She was a renowned, beloved cook. Her family and friends will always remember the delicious fried apple pies and banana pudding she delighted in preparing for them. Throughout her life, she was a strong Christian woman and servant to others, as she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, helped start a church and was very active in a nursing home ministry until late last year. She was a very faithful member of Cornerstone Baptist Church.
Survivors include her sons, Ted B. Woody of Crossville and Art Woody, Jr and his wife Linda also of Crossville; daughters, Vicki Padron and her husband Eddie of Crossville, and Cynthia (C.A.) Bilodeau and her husband Russell of Lomita, CA; brothers, Garland and Mitchell Brown both of Crossville; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur D. Woody Sr.; infant twins; daughter, Mollie Jean Brady; grandson, Steven Brady; brothers, Leslie and Sanford Brown; and sister, Martha Anderson.
Pallbearers will be Aaron Woody, "Little Art" Woody , Rex Bilodeau, Gary Mignogna, Andy Hendrigsman and Jeremiah Faalafua.
