Chico Record, Friday Morning, August 23, 1907, pg 5 col 2-3: Dropped Dead Without a Minute's Notice. M.W. Banks, respected old resident of Chico, Stricken while Apparently enjoying Good Health. Was One of the Many Who Crossed the Plain to California in the Late Fifties – Early Day Freighter From Sacramento to Virginia City.

M.W. Banks, an aged resident of Chico, dropped dead last evening about 5 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L. Glass, on Eight street. He had been watering the lawn, as was his habit at that time of day, and when told by his daughter that supper was ready, walked to the porch to put away a wire cutter that he was using, when suddenly he clasped his arms around a palm tree and seemed to be in pain. His daughter, seeing that he was in distress, went to his aid, when he fell back into her arms unconscious. Her screams brought assistance and the old gentleman was lowered to the lawn, where he expired.

Mr. Banks was born in Clark county, Kentucky, in 1832. He married Mary L. Edrington in 1857 and crossed the plains to California in 1860, arriving in Yolo county in the fall of that year. He followed faming for several years and then drove a team from Sacramento to Virginia City, in the days when goods had to be transported by freight wagons. He later moved to Sonoma county, where he followed blacksmithing.

In 1872 he moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he followed mining until about six years ago, when he came to Chico to spend his declining years with his daughter.

The deceased leaves a son, Zeph Banks, whose present address is not known, and one daughter, Mrs. L. Glass.

Mrs. Wade Thomas, a daughter of Mrs. Glass, is in the Yosemite with her husband, and they will be notified immediately of the death. It is probable that an autopsy will be held. Arrangements for the funeral will be made later.

Chico Record, Saturday Morning, August 24, 1907, pg five col 2: Banks Funeral. The funeral of M.W. Banks will take place this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. L. Glass, corner Eight and Orient.
