Susannah Chenoweth Thornton was the daughter of Gideon and Mary (Simmons) Chenoweth. She was born 28 Mar 1839 in Lee Co., Aowa; d. 16 Dec. 1928 in Eugene, Lane Co., OR. She was married to Rev. William Edward Thornton 18 Feb 1858 in DeKalb Co., MO.

The family crossed the plains from Missouri to Oregon in 1868 by ox team. They located on Oak Creek, in Douglas County, OR in 1868. They lived in the following places: California; Olalla, OR; Mayville, OR; Dillard, OR; and Springfield, OR.

They had 11 children: Samuel, Mary (died young), John, Martha (died young), Elderada (Carter. Brosi),Orville, Nancy (Wiley), Sarah Maybelle (Mangini), Betty (Gearin, Nancy (Watson), Sarah (Wiley), Joseph, Olivea (Murry) and Bertha (Westrope).
