James married Melissa Ann Carr April 1, 1866. They had 3 children: Jane abt. 1866; Stroud abt. 1868 Enora abt. 1869.

James was widowed and living with his parents and working on their farm by 1880 according to U.S. Census Records. He was widowed before age 35.

He did remarry to Malisia C. Barnes they resided in Benton, TN. Their Grand-daughter Bessie Odle (brn 1907) was raised in their household. {Her parents were Richard B. and Mattie Odle.}

The James Barnes in Benton Co. looks like the same person as James, s/o John & Matilda, and that he possibly remarried Niecy, however, I have been digging and there is another James H (Henderson) Barnes b. 1845 who lived in Benton Co., TN. He married Angeline Lewis in 1866 in Benton co. She died in 1910 or 11, and married Malisia Holland. Both Malisia and James died in 1931. James and both wives are buried together.

Bessie Odel is shown living with James and Malisia in 1920 and 1930 in Benton Co. Malisia's death cert shows her maiden name as Holland.
