Chico Morning Chronicle-Record, Tuesday, December 15, 1896, pg 3 col 4: Death of An Old Resident. Van Swearingen Passes Away in San Francisco. Yesterday afternoon word was received in this city of the death of Van Swearingen, which occurred in San Francisco yesterday morning.
“Pap” Swearingen was an old resident of this city, and was one of the most widely known men in this section of the country. He was a tailor by trade, and at the time of his death was about 76 years of age.
The remains arrived in Chico on this morning’s Oregon express, and the funeral will take place this forenoon at 10 o’clock from the Main Street M.E. Church. Thos. Jensen, the undertaker, will have charge of the interment.
