Nell Boswell Blair, 93, of Gulf Breeze, Fla. died Feb. 17, 2011.
She was born March 13, 1917 near Inverness, Ala. After attending Troy State Teachers College she taught first grade at Falco, Ala. where she met her husband, Howard Blair at a school dance. During World War II she was the head teacher at a Bay Minette nursery school that cared for children of women working for the war effort.
In 1945 Mrs. Blair moved to Grove Hill with her husband who was assistant county agent. She was a faithful member of the Grove Hill Methodist Church and participated in many community activities, including the PTA, the Study Club and the hospital auxiliary. She owned and operated a clothing store, The Blair Shop, for several years.
After 53 years in Grove Hill she moved to Columbia, S.C. to be near her two sons. She enjoyed visits and trips with family and friends and attending her new church, the Columbia Main Street Methodist Church. When her son Howard retired to Gulf Breeze, Fla. she moved to Bay Breeze Nursing and Retirement Center.
Survivors include two sons, Howard (Donna) Blair, Gulf Breeze, Fla., John ( Janet) Blair, Aiken. S.C.; two daughters, Betty ( Wayne) Johansen, Scotts Valley, Calif., Ann ( Jimmy) Edwards, Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Athey (Mike Goodwin), Scotts Valley, Calif., Susan Athey (Guido Imbens), Cambridge, Mass., Mark (Angie) Blair, Hartsville, S.C., Rachel Blair, Greenville, S.C., Elizabeth (Scott) Bell, Jacksonville, Fla., Eli ( Tracy) Edwards, Eric Edwards, all of Seattle, Wash., Maggie Blair, Aiken, S.C.; eight great-grandchildren; many beloved nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Blair, her parents, Florence and Seals Boswell and 11 brothers and sisters.
A graveside service was Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. at Magnolia Lawn Cemetery in Grove Hill.
