JACOB WIGAL DIES SUDDENLY
Civil War Veteran Taken to Springfield, Minn., Today For Burial

Jacob Wigal, Civil War Veteran, passed away Monday morning, January 8, 1934, at the age of 87 years, 7 months and 23 days. Death came unexpectedly, although he had been suffering from an abscessed tooth.

Mr. Wigal was born at Buffalo, N.Y., May 16, 1846. He enlisted in the Union Army in company "B". Wisconsin 37 Vol. Inf. at the age of 18 years, March 26, 1864. He was wounded in action and rose to the rank of corporal while in the service, being honorably discharged July 27, 1865.

The veteran was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and the A.O.U.W. Lodge.

He was married Nov. 9, 1867 to Alice D. Weed, at Oak Grove, Wisconsin. He came to Minnesota in the year 1872 and took a homestead near Springfield, Minn., where they resided for over thirty years. The following six years were spent on a farm near Sheldon, N.D., after which they came to Osakis where he has lived for over twenty-four years.

Surviving are the widow and two daughters, Mary E. at home and Alice Louise Lowell of Lowell[Loyal], Wisconsin.

A military funeral under the auspices of the American Legion was held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock at the residence. Rev. Hugh Hay, pastor of the local Methodist Church, officiated. The music was furnished by a quartette, composed of Miss Etta Manning, Clyde Long, Mr. and Mrs. L.D. Warner.

The pallbearers were: Alfred Hanson, Jim Hanson, Wm. Clark, Vic Edenloff, Ole Kleppen and J. Paul Kinney. The colors were carried by one of Osakis' two remaining Civil War veterans, Mr. Wm. Johnson.

The body was taken to Springfield, Minn., Thursday morning by the Hanson Funeral Service. Services were held from the Methodist Church there. Both daughters accompanied the remains to Springfield. The American Legion Post there gave the veteran a military funeral.
