Johann was born in Lessapol, Volhynia, Russia. He immigrated to the U.S. on September 15, 1909 arriving at Baltimore. He was travelling with his mother and three siblings and they were to join their father in Benton Harbor, Michigan. From 1917 to 1922 he served in the U.S. Army during WWI, while stationed in Germany he met and married Elizabeth Mueller on May 27, 1922 after his tour of duty ended in July 1922 he returned home. In December of 1922 his wife Elizabeth joined him in Benton Harbor, Michigan. While working in a drop forge in Lansing he bought a farm in Eaton Rapids, Michigan where they resided the rest of their lives.
