William Whitehurst was born on 17 October 1882 in Baltimore (Independent City), Maryland. He died on 27 September 1932 in Baltimore (Independent City), Maryland. He was buried on 30 September 1932 at Baltimore Cemetery. William married Matilda Bewig on 20 April 1903 at the home of her sister Augusta (Bewig)
Kammke, Baltimore (Independent City), Maryland. Matilda was born on 3 February 1886 in Baltimore (Independent City), Maryland. She died on 17 February 1943 in Baltimore (Independent City), Maryland. She was buried on 22 February 1943 at Baltimore Cemetery.

Five year old William [this man as a child at the death of his father], tears swelling up in his innocent blue eyes, gazed upon the coffin of his father, Captain Whitehurst. His four siblings, ranging from 9 year old Emma to 6 month old Annie, were also there "crying as if their hearts would break." The sensation produced by the shooting of Captain Whitehurst and the five hundred plus persons who came for the funeral did little to dull the pain of this loss. Undoubtedly, this tragedy had a deep impact on William.

From that tragic day in 1888 to 1903 our record is blank. William was descended from men of
"energy and business capacity." His father was a schooner captain, and his grandfather (mom's father) was a German immigrant who became a successful farmer in Baltimore County. Like his ancestors, William ran his own business later in life. In 1910 he was an iron cutter at a machine shop. By 1920 he was a junk dealer and by 1930 his son Henry was helping him at his own junk yard. Because his wife, Matilda, came from a wealthier family she was able to deal in more real property, never-the-less the pattern of work in William's family is admirable.
