He was educated in England and came to British Columbia in 1858. He built the Brownsville Hotel circa 1864. Around 1875 the confluence of Semiahmoo Road, Yale Road, Telegraph Trail, and Kennedy Trail linked the Upper Fraser Valley and the Fraser Canyon, making Brownsville an important community.
With no Patullo Bridge until 1936, a K de K ferry was operated between New Westminster and Brownsville by Captain Angus Grant, named after his son-in-law Joseph Sexton Knevett de Knevett.
