from Elsie (Vercoe) Dahl:

John Parkyn Vercoe and wife Gertrude (Liddell) and five children sailed from Padstow, Cornwall, England on April 17, 1851, landed in Quebec, Canada May 27, 1851. Settled on a farm 1 mile west of Sparta, Ontario, Canada. While in England he was a linen draper (dry goods merchant) and very strong Methodist. Both the Vercoe and Liddell families had lived in Cornwall England for 200 years and ancestors can be traced back to 1250. Two ancestors had been Lord Mayor of London, one in 1482 and the other 1522. In the town of Bodmin where they lived, both families were leading citizens, Gertrudes father was a publisher, a brother was a doctor, another was a photographer. Two were naval officers. Others were concerned in the promotion - surveying and managing the first railway in their district (quoted from a diary) I was sent a copy from supposed carried by John P. Vercoe. From a hugh photostat I received from William Henry Vercoe which traces the lineage of Gertrude Liddell to 1696, and which showed her brothers etc. I also learned where one of her brothers, Thomas, married the sister of John Parkyn Vercoe, Amy Vercoe, Their children were 1. Thomas 2. Margaret 3. Mary, 4. Ellen 5. Henry. As for the names of Gertrude Liddells father and mother, brothers and sisters, we get this. Father, James Liddell, Mother, Mary Martyn, whose line we trace back. Gertrude the tenth or youngest child.
