The son of Thomas Meacham and Rebecca Grandy Sanford, Samuel was a hunter like his father. He was also a Union veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted at Nicholville, New York on December 18, 1861, and the day after Christmas, at age 49, he mustered in Company G, 98th New York Volunteer Infantry, with his son Sylvester. He served in that unit until March 6, 1863, when he mustered out at Hampton, Virginia with a disability discharge.
